The winning work of the 2008 Waverley Printmaking Prize
Artist, printmaker and illustrator Mark Rowden was born in England and moved to Australia in 1996.
His high level of technical knowledge comes from 5 years of art education and over 8 years of professional fine art printing.
In capturing his subjects Mark Rowden uses vast, flat areas of tone to produce dramatic shadows.
In his subtleties of line he controls where you look at the work, the slightest piece of light leading you to the next detail.
There is a sense of chiaroscuro and even film noir style to each of the images, with high contrasts, low-lighting,
and the use of strong shadows cast upon faces.
Through the stopped motion of the narration, each time the work is seen more of the subject is revealed.
